Upon completion of this module, you should be able to define polymer, explain what happens during polymerization, and describe some uses of polymers. Polymers are macromolecules formed by covalently bonded repetitive smaller units called monomers. Polyethylene is the simplest polymer made of ethylene monomers. The repetitive nature of the polyethylene polymer provides a short and concise way of representing the molecular formula of that macromolecule. An alkene like ethylene polymerizes into a high-density polyethylene macromolecule abbreviated HDPE.
