Limiting Reagents

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to determine the limiting reagent in a chemical reaction and determine the reactant in excess in a chemical reaction. A limiting reagent, also known as limiting reactant, is the reactant in a chemical reaction that determines how much product is formed. A limiting reagent is completely used up—there is none of it left when the reaction is over. Some of the other reactants usually remain and are described as being “in excess” or excess reagents.
