Functional Groups

Topic Description

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to describe five families of functional groups and recognize and name functional groups in an organic compound. A group of atoms with characteristic chemical and physical properties is called a functional group. When focusing on a single functional group on a chemical compound, the letter R is used to represent the part of the compound that is not the functional group.
